The Facial – Basic steps in facial skin
care
Skin Cleansing
The importance of cleansing eyes and lips,
especially for women who wear make-up daily,
cannot be over stressed. The skin around
the eyes is extremely fine-textured and
delicate. When choosing an eye and lip make-up
remover, probably the most suitable are
those that are waterproof since these are
best at leaving the eye area soft and protected.
Avoid removers that are perfumed.
Always cleanse the skin. Adopt this practice
day and night.
• If your skin is normal to combination
or oily to problematic, a foaming cleanser
is most suitable as it will leave your skin
feeling more tight and well-balanced.
• If your skin is sensitive, dehydrated
or mature, a nice creamy cleanser would
be most efficacious; it will leave your
skin feeling soft and hydrated and will
tend to reduce redness in sensitive-skin
types.
Both cleanser types can be used with water.
When wearing make-up, always remember to
double cleanse using sponges as this will
remove make-up more thoroughly.
Skin Toning
Always tone the skin after cleansing. Adopt
this practice day and night.
A toner is applied with cotton pads. This
process is like applying a skin treatment
lotion. Avoid using toners with an alcohol
base; these could aggravate and sting the
skin. The toner removes any excess cleanser
and dirt while soothing and tightening the
pores.
Skin Exfoliating
Once each week, after toning, we should
exfoliate the skin.
Exfoliating removes the outer layer of
dead skin cells along with any excess sebum
deposits thus refining the complexion, brightening
and smoothing the skin.
• If your skin is normal to combination,
a light granular scrub is the more suitable.
• If your skin is sensitive, prone to break
out and/or extremely dehydrated, a cream-based
exfoliant would be more beneficial. These
are very light-textured and hydrating exfoliants
that are applied to the skin and left on
for a few minutes, then gently peeled off.
Facial Masking
Once each week, after exfoliation, we should
apply a facial mask best suited for our
skin type.
Masks maintain the skin’s balance and vitality.
A facial mask will provide an instant improvement
to the skin, refining the texture, hydrating
the tissues, blotting excess oil and impurities
and lightening the visage. After removing
the mask always tone the skin again.
Skin Moisturising
The skin needs to be moisturised after
skin toning. Adopt this practice day and
night.
Moisturising will leave the skin nice and
supple, hydrated and provide a barrier before
applying make-up. Finish the moisturising
process with a small pump of an eye cream
because the eye contour has no active lipid
production and they need hydration and external
protection that an eye cream can provide
