Lymphatic System – Benefit for the skin The lymphatic system acts as the body’s sewer system. It is the means by which wastes are carried away from the cells. Blood and lymph work together to increase both the elimination of harmful toxins and the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. The lymphatic system consists of a network of tubes or vessels that reach all parts of the body. The lymphatic vessels are blind ending and there is no heart to pump fluid through them. It also includes associated organs, such as lymph nodes and the spleen. The vessels and nodes reach most parts of the body returning excess fluid to the blood stream and playing an important part in the defence against pathogens. Lymphatic massage benefits the skin because it increases the lymph flow and speeds up the natural detoxification process of the system. It stimulates the skin and rejuvenates cellular function, which also affects the health of skin and helps to keep it clean and toned.

The Effects of ageing of the skin

The skin protects the entire body. It manufactures vitamins and hormones and sends inner messages to the outside world. It also makes us aware of what is going on around us by using one of the strongest sensations – that of touch. The skin has served the same function through half a million years of evolution and, although times may have changed, the same basic functions of skin have not. The skin protects the body from injury and bacteria. The epidermis is covered with a thin layer of sebum, which makes the skin waterproof; therefore the skin is resistant to water induced changes. The appearance of aged skin is when the outer layer becomes thinned. The skin looks rough and dry; it loses its elasticity causing wrinkles and sagging and the skin can also be thicker, leathery and lose its plump look from the loss of collagen. This eventually happens to us all due to natural aging of the skin. The sun is responsible for at least 90 per cent of the appearance of skin aging. The sun is the most destructive and also the most preventable of the cause of wrinkles. The sun causes the skin to take on a leathery texture, with permanently etched deep creases. Facial expressions cause all the furrows that become imprinted on the face and, although these expressions are a way of communication and can be just habits we forget we are doing, these can eventually form wrinkles and creases that also give the appearance of ageing skin.
